In order to open a bank account, you need to be registered at the Citizens’ Registration Office and bring among other documents the “Meldebescheinigung” to the appointment. Germans like their appointments, opening a bank account is no exception. One more rule is that you and the bank clerk need at least on some level to understand each other. It is quite usual that the clerks do not speak English, for that reason it is very important to ask for an English-speaking clerk or at least one who can speak your language. Take into account that you will not receive the Banking Card and PIN at the appointment, but within 1-2 weeks by post mail to your registered address. At some banks, you even need to wait for your IBAN ( Bank account number ). Thus, choose your bank and clerk wisely, otherwise, the whole process will become unnecessarily difficult. Opening a banking account seems to be a simple task, but it’s always about the details. Leave nothing to chance.
